Cool Furniture! The Best Home Furnishings for Living Rooms

Frankie Elmquist is an interior architect and our home design specialist. She’s worked around the globe for some of the top design firms in the world and now she brings her expertise to you.

We’ve been combing the Home Design Shows to bring you the best home furnishings and home decor ideas from around the world. We kicked-off this September at the bi-annual Designers Saturday in Norway to check out what’s new in international and Scandinavian design. Interior designers, decorators, architects and furniture makers took to the streets of Oslo to cover six different neighborhoods in search of new cool furniture, lighting and home decor ideas. While manufacturers, showrooms and home design shops went all out to showcase the newest products, lines and furniture trends.

Here we’re going to give you a look at the best home furnishings for living rooms seen at Designers Saturday Oslo and ICFF in New York City.

Totally Tubular

Tubular metal frames have made a big a comeback in home furniture. We saw them on sofas, chairs, couches and more! No longer just utilitarian, these new metal frames have slender profiles and come in elegant finishes such as un-lacquered brass, warm copper and polished chrome, or powder coated in fabulous on-trend colors. Here are a few of the best examples:

The Beetle Lounge Chair. We love this timeless new chair design from Italian and Scandinavian design duo GamFratesi for Gubi. It’s simple, streamlined, elegant and comfortable. Shown at Tannum Møbler, Oslo. Image from

Designer Reza Feiz of Phase Design, LA captures “Hollywood Chic” beautifully in his Trolley Seating Collection. The collection includes armchairs, high-back lounge chairs and side chairs. Shown at ICFF, NYC. Image from

The cute, colorful and remarkably comfortable Nolita Outdoor Chairs by Simone Mandelli and Antonio Pagliarulo for Pedrali SpA. A vintage chic design created to recall the original 1960’s Italian garden furniture by Pedrali. The powder-coated steel tube frames come in 8 signature colors. Showcased at Mancini Contract, Oslo. Plush to the Touch

Upholstered in soft pastel mohair fabrics or rich gem-toned velvets this new home furniture has a plush, inviting look and luxurious look. Like beautiful macarons the Stay Chairs below from Se´ London will transform any living room into a grand salon. Shown at ICFF, NYC. Image from

Curvy Profiles

Sculptural curved profiles create fresh and modern take on the traditional camel-back, cabriole and fainting sofa styles. Here are a few of our favorite curvy couches:

The swoon-worthy Scandinavian design Grand Piano Sofa by Gubi Olsen for Gubi International which was showcased at Tannum Møbler, Oslo. Image from

When combined with the new metal frames the swooping profiles of these couches and chairs create a light sophisticated and delicate look that exemplifies the new look of luxury in home furniture. Image above from Image below from
