International Contemporary Furniture Fair, NYC - The Latest Furniture & Home Design Trends

RoomSketcher headed to the 27th annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York City last weekend to check out the latest trends in furniture, seating, carpets, flooring, lighting, outdoor furniture, wall coverings, kitchens and baths. ICFF is the largest North American showcase for global design featuring over 700 exhibitors and attracts over 30,000 home design professionals from around the world.

Over the next few weeks we’ll share with you our take on the trends, where to find them and how to implement them in your home design projects. Here are a few of the highlights:

Furniture and Home Design Trends

Handcrafted – Whether its exquisite wood furniture or floor and wall coverings it’s all about being handmade and reviving traditional techniques, elevating them and making them modern.

In wood furniture we saw a revival of classic shapes like the Windsor chairs by O & G Studio and nail head embellishment by Sandback. Dark woods with deep rich finishes and grain patterns still reign as in the Tui Chair below by Hui Ling Cheng which won the ICFF Editors Choice award for Best Seating.

Sustainable – There were luxurious silk-like carpets made from bamboo from Now Carpets, colorful patchwork rugs made from vintage cast offs from ICI Hali and handmade carpets using natural wool colors to make modern designs by Grain Design.

Collaborative – From large design collaborations like G-Star RAW Denim’s revival of Jean Prouve’s office furniture for Vitra to small collaborations like Ecor’s collaboration with design students to create “bent-board” furniture from their environmental composite board panels. Collaborative efforts were seen throughout the show, yielding new, interesting and creative takes on new materials, traditional techniques, and classic furniture.
