New Mexico MLS Makes Floor Plans Mandatory for All Listings
The New Mexico Multiple Listing Service (NMMLS) will require floor plans for all property listings starting in early 2025, becoming the first US Multiple Listing Service to mandate this requirement.

In a groundbreaking move, the New Mexico Multiple Listing Service (NMMLS) has announced that all residential, rental, and multifamily property listings on its platform will require floor plans starting in early 2025.
This decision makes NMMLS the first MLS in the United States to mandate the inclusion of floor plans, setting a new standard for the real estate industry.
Why Floor Plans Matter
The initiative comes as a response to growing consumer demand for greater transparency and access to property information.
While only 17% of U.S. property listings included floor plans in 2021, studies have shown that buyers increasingly value this feature.
According to Rightmove, one in five homeowners would completely disregard a listing without a floor plan, highlighting their importance in the decision-making process.
Megan E. McFarlane, Executive Director of NMMLS, emphasized the significance of this change: "At NMMLS, we are committed to delivering the highest quality data and media to consumers, and this initiative is a major step forward in achieving that goal. Requiring floor plans on listings ensures that every buyer in New Mexico has access to the tools they need to make better decisions".
Benefits for Buyers and Agents
The new requirement is expected to benefit both buyers and real estate agents. For buyers, it provides a clearer understanding of property layouts, potentially reducing post-purchase dissatisfaction.
For agents, it offers an opportunity to showcase properties more effectively. McFarlane added, "This move also ensures our brokers remain on the cutting edge, delivering a superior listing experience for their clients. NMMLS is proud to be a leader in this space and excited to set a new standard for our industry".
Looking to the Future
As NMMLS takes this pioneering step, the organization hopes other MLSs will follow suit, potentially transforming how real estate information is presented nationwide.
This initiative aligns New Mexico's real estate practices with those of countries like the UK, Australia, and Sweden, where floor plans have long been a standard feature of property listings.
